Traveling with Style: A Modern Guide to Timeless Etiquette

If the walls of The Saint Paul Hotel could talk, they’d tell tales of elegance, charm, and a timeless commitment to true hospitality. For over 100 years, we’ve welcomed guests from around the world, each bringing their unique sense of style, culture, and courtesy. And while travel has certainly changed since our grand opening in 1910, the art of being a good guest remains just as important.

Whether you’re checking into our historic hotel in St. Paul for a quick weekend getaway, coming in to celebrate a special occasion, or joining us for a corporate conference, a touch of etiquette can go a long way in making your experiences more easeful, elegant, and enjoyable — not just for you, but for everyone you interact with.

In today’s blog, we’re talking about travel manners you can take with you anywhere. We’re sharing insights from our own etiquette programming and hospitality experts here at The Saint Paul Hotel, the best historic hotel in the Twin Cities

In the Know: Today’s Hotel Etiquette

A lot has changed since our historic hotel in the Twin Cities opened its doors, but courtesy will never go out of style. We asked our hospitality heroes and etiquette experts here at The Saint Paul Hotel for some etiquette tips to help us walk through the world with more ease and communicate more intentionally:

  • First impressions matter. Greet staff and fellow guests warmly, make eye contact, and offer a sincere “thank you.” Small gestures set the tone for your visit.
  • Tipping is timeless. A good rule of thumb? $5–$10 for bell service, $2–$5 per night for housekeeping, and 15–20% at restaurants or bars. If someone goes above and beyond, let them (and the front desk) know.
  • Privacy is a privilege. Keep phone conversations at a moderate volume in shared spaces, and avoid speakerphone entirely. Trust us — your fellow guests appreciate it.
  • Dress the part. There’s no need for formalwear, but a little effort goes a long way. Business casual attire is always welcome in public spaces and dining rooms.
  • Abide the Golden Rule. Always try to treat others as you’d like to be treated. Remembering we’re all part of a community — even when traveling — can make life a little easier for everyone.

Do’s & Don’ts: Courtesy for Contemporary Travelers

When in doubt, lean into kindness and consideration — even when you’re tired, even when it’s tough. Here are a few more do’s and don’ts to keep in mind:

Do:

  • Use “please” and “thank you” often and authentically.
  • Let housekeeping know if you’d like your room refreshed or if you’d prefer privacy.
  • Be patient during check-in and checkout, especially during busy times.
  • Ask questions! Our team is always happy to help.

Don’t:

  • Assume everything is included. Check your hotel package details for dining, parking, or amenity inclusions.
  • Skip out on gratitude. If a staff member improves your stay or you’re especially appreciative of an experience, a kind word or note goes a long way.
  • Forget to be present. Put your phone away during meals or while speaking with hotel staff.
